Spyography

Matthew Jensen (born March 21, 1975), known by his primary stage name, “M.C. Spy”, or by his alias, “The Funkniac” (funk+maniac) is a Canadian rapper, producer and entertainment/marketing entrepreneur. M.C. Spy quickly gained popularity in 2001 with his independently-released debut album “Spyography”. The following album in 2002, “Anatomy of a Funkniac”, was a solid follow up and brought not only a strong local following but a massive online audience. A friend to everybody and always willing to lend a hand, M.C. Spy became a mainstay and a favourite among artists in the Calgary hip hop scene.

M.C. Spy has performed in many places both locally and abroad. At a resort in Cuba, M.C. Spy became an instant celebrity among the locals and other travelers after a live performance with a 7-piece local Caribbean band. Spy has also performed in Edmonton Alberta, Kelowna British Columbia (where he performed with Canadian hip hop legend Maestro Fresh Wes in a sort of “impromptu” challenge from the Juno Award-winning rapper), Las Vegas, where he performed in 2007 for a crowd right on the Las Vegas strip, Vancouver British Columbia – as part of the original chapters of DJ Sound Wars at Thunderbird Stadium at UBC and Calgary Alberta, where he has opened for Swollen Members among others and shared the stage with countless members of the Calgary scene. Other than a few shows, Spy has since put live performances on the backburner while focusing on his family.

M.C. Spy got his first taste of hip hop in the summer of 1984 when his dad brought home the instructional LP, aptly titled, “Breakdance”. “I can still remember the moment that the needle hit the record for the first time and I heard that unforgettable scratch that leads off the track “Rockit” by Herbie Hancock and Grandmaster Flash. As soon as I heard it, I was hooked.” Since that day, Spy’s influences have included Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C., Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, Slick Rick, Ice-T, Maestro Fresh Wes, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, MC Lyte, Rakim, Eazy-E, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Swollen Members, Tech N9ne, Dr. Dre, Eminem and The Game … just to name a few. 😉

M.C. Spy is the founder of hiphopcalgary.ca, a user-driven online website and promotion initiative that is the perfect compliment to The Movement (a Calgary-based group of like-minded individuals who are seeking the unification of artists, producers and more in the local hip hop community).

M.C. Spy currently resides in Kelowna, BC with his beautiful wife and their two children and has all but officially retired from the performing and recording side of music.
